Honda RC-166 | 1966

Project type

1:12 Motorcycle Scale Model

Date

May 2024

The iconic Honda RC66 1966, a six cylinder beast of the early days of racing. With only 250cc but able to rev to over 18,000 RPM this machine was able to produce 60 HP and a whopping 240kmh. At the time there was absolutely nothing like it and it brought many championship victories to the brand.

This Tamiya kit was a joy to build. The amount of small detail on the motor, clutch and valve cover is stunning. I even debated wether I would set it up without the fairings because it is almost a crime to hide so much detail. The kit also came with a few rubber parts such as the seat, grips and radiator hoses. While these are a little harder to paint in some cases they look far more real on the finished project.

One of the biggest challenges here were the spoked wheels. I had never built a bike with spoked wheels and they are extremely fragile and difficult to glue due to the chrome finish. They have to be carefully stripped with a hobby knife and glued with a metric ton of patience.

Overall I am extremely pleased with the results!
